Battle of the Bases: Rimmel

Rimmel, Foundation, Wake Me Up, True Match, Lasting Finish Nude, Review

Rimmel, Foundation, Wake Me Up, True Match, Lasting Finish Nude, Review

I've mentioned Rimmel London on my blog a fair few times, it's a drugstore brand that's amongst some of my favourites and one I always go back to. Although I definitely love their lipsticks, my favourite Rimmel products are their bases. Foundations are something I often skimp on. Even though people often say that if you're going to go high end with a product, make it a base, I just can't quite manage to part with £30+ just for a foundation. I've dabbled in many a drugstore foundation and I've found some keepers and some very questionable ones. However, I have yet to try one of Rimmel's base offerings that I don't like, so I thought I'd do a little round up of the three Rimmel foundations I have and compare them!

1. Wake Me Up Foundation - This is hands down my most repurchased foundation of all time. I remember trying this for the first time at a friend's house and instantly demanding to know what it was. I used this and this almost exclusively throughout school and into my late teens. This is a fairly full-coverage foundation that has a dewy finish and has shimmer running through it. Whilst my teen self was besotted with this foundation, since entering into my twenties, I've found this a bit heavy - I definitely preferred a heavier foundation back then. I also always repurchased the same shade of this which it has apparently taken me around six years to notice is about five shades too dark for me! Whilst I still use this foundation from time to time, I think it's better if you're looking for a fuller coverage foundation. I also have to say that the shimmer in this is a bit much for me now, it's not that noticeable normally but as soon as your face hits the wrong kind of light: discoball. Despite my gripes, I do still like this foundation, it's moisturising, glowy and leaves a natural finish on the skin - just don't hang out under any strong artificial lighting!

2. Match Perfection Foundation - I picked this foundation up last year and for a while it was an every day staple in my makeup routine. This promises perfecting radiance with traceless coverage and perfectly flawless skin under any light - some bold claims! This is another foundation that has a dewy finish, however I'd say this one is quite a bit lighter in texture than the Wake Me Up foundation. I have combination skin, which has leant a bit more to the oily side in the last few years, so I'm slightly wary of anything that promises radiance. Having said that, as long as I powder, I don't really have any issue with shine with this foundation. This still has good coverage but is definitely lower coverage than the Wake Me Up. Although the lasting power of this foundation isn't fantastic, it lasts a good seven hours on me before going patchy and for £6.99, I really can't complain.

3. Lasting Finish Nude Foundation - Speaking of bold claims: this foundation boasts 25-hour wear. It's described as a poreless finish, hiding fine lines and imperfections whilst being sweat proof, rub and smudge resistant for 25 hours. I'll say straight off the bat that I've never had this on my face for anywhere close to 25 hours. I love makeup, but sitting up all day and night to test a foundation is taking it a little far - even for me. This foundation is a different version of the original Lasting Finish Nude foundation, with the Nude version being formulated with a medium coverage. The finish of this is definitely less dewy than the other two foundations, something I love because it keeps shine at bay, but something to be wary of if you have drier skin. Of all three this has the best lasting power and looks the most natural on my skin for the longest period of time. The coverage is good: it covers what it needs to without being cakey or heavy. Thumbs up.

The verdict: Whilst all three hold a firm place in my stash, I'd say that the Lasting Finish Nude foundation is the winner for me. It looks the most natural on my skin and it really does pack a punch when it comes to lasting power! If you're in the market for a new foundation, Rimmel is definitely a good option with a fair amount of choice - and all for under a tenner - bargain.

  1. Ugrh this is really weird the Finish Nude foundation looks awful on me - but probably because I have insanely dry skin. I do love the wake me up but I'm the same with the shimmer!
