From left to right: Eugenie, Margherita.

Where do I start with these? From the moment I saw the Giambattista Valli for MAC collection pop up on the Internet, I was hellbent on tracking it down. Predictably, Switzerland was months behind the UK and the states in getting this collection, so I sat and waited (impatiently) for the release date. I went to two different locations to ask about these and both of the MAC employees told me straight away that this collection was going to sell out instantly, and that if I wanted to get any of the lipsticks I should literally stand outside the shop and wait for it to open on the release date. This sounded excessive to me. Did that stop me? No. I was outside Jelmoli in Zurich promptly at 9:30am on the 1st of September, scrutinising everyone around me in case they were competition. They were not. It was just me and one very well dressed girl who looked around my age who stormed straight to the MAC counter once the doors opened. I'm actually fairly sure that I was the only one who stormed in and that she sauntered in fairly cooly, but I digress. I managed to get the two shades that I had planned on getting, Eugenie and Margherita, and left the shop in triumph.

Dramatic tale aside, I've had a lot of fun testing these out since I got them. The whole collection consists of five lipsticks, all matte in formula. I'm a big fan of MAC lipsticks in general, but their mattes are some of my favourite lipsticks, because they're creamy and have great lasting power without being too drying and these are no different.

Eugenie is described as a dark cherry with blue undertones. I was immediately drawn to this shade. I love berry lips in the autumn/winter and as soon as the weather starts to get a bit colder, I'm quick to whip out all my darker lip shades. This is a cool toned berry which has more of a semi-matte finish. I've been using this with my MAC Vino lip liner and I've found it stays on rather well, whilst being slightly drying, as expected. Something I love about this is that you can also pat a small amount into the lips for a lighter berry stain if you don't want to go the whole hog with a dark lip. Very versatile.

Margherita is described as a yellow bright peach and is a warm toned orangey coral shade. Whilst it is a matte lipstick, I'd say that this has more of a sheen left to it than Eugenie. I was hesitant about buying this shade because I wasn't sure how wearable it was as an everyday shade. It is quite bright, however I've been using a light hand with application and keeping my eyes simple and I really like the colour. Being a coral shade, it does however emphasise any dry patches or lines, so make sure your lips are in good condition before applying this! That aside, this is a very wearable everyday peachy coral.

I'm very glad that I picked these up, because if nothing else - the packaging! I think I'll get a lot of use out of both of these shades and I'm chuffed I actually managed to get my hands on them at all. When I was notified by MAC's email subscription that these were for sale on the website, I checked back a mere few hours later and every single shade was already sold out. It seems that my overzealous early morning shopping did in fact pay off. At least I didn't power walk through Zurich for nothing!

  1. I'm definitely attracted to that darker shade but I'd buy both just for the packaging, so beautiful! Great post :) x

  3. The packaging of these lipsticks is so beautiful! Congrats on getting your hands on these, it wasn't until after they had sold out in the UK that I found out that there was a shade in my name in this collection (*sob*). The shades of these are gorgeous, I think I prefer the coral but the dark cherry is perfect for autumn/winter :) x

    1. The packaging is kind of what sold me on these, I'm sorry that you didn't manage to get one! I'd say the coral is probably more of an everyday shade, but I definitely love dark lipsticks during the colder months! xo

    1. The brighter coral shade is actually more wearable than it looks, especially if you only apply it lightly. I do love the dark cherry shade too though! Thank you! xo
