A few months ago, when the weather was still scorching and summer was in full swing, I did a little roundup of the Essie polishes I was using the most. As with most people, I like to match my nails with the season, so whilst I'll happily don pastels and neons for months throughout summer, come September I can't wait to get back into the neutrals and darker nail shades. Essie is a brand I always go back to when it comes to nail polish. The quantity of Essie polishes far outweigh those from any other brands in my stash and I always seem to find new shades to put on my wish list - their colours and collections are gorgeous! On top of the amazing shade rage, the brush and formula are some of the best I've tried within the price range. So without further ado, let's get onto the five Essie polishes I'm currently loving!

1. Fifth Avenue - Now, I know what you're thinking, I waffled on about loving neutrals and darker nails in the autumn and now I'm whipping out a bright red first thing. This may seem like a slightly odd choice, but I find that there's just something very autumnal about a proper orangey-red. Maybe it has something to do with those bright orange leaves you see falling off trees? Who knows. Either way, I find that I'm always reaching for this during the colder months. I'm not one to really sport a red nail, I find that it can look quite dated on me, but something about this colour is just far cooler than your average red. I think it's a nice autumnal take on a bright red nail and it can really add a nice pop of colour to an otherwise monochrome wardrobe - guilty.

2. Master Plan - If you read my greige nail edit post a while back, you'll know that I searched high and low for the perfect greige nail polish. Master Plan came pretty bloomin' close and it's a gorgeous shade. I'd describe this as a grey that contains slight hints of lavender. I tend to go for this when I don't really feel like wearing much on my nails, but I don't want to leave them bare. I think this shade just looks very classy and gives me a much needed polished look (no pun intended) on days when I'm walking around looking like a scruff. Basically, a great one for those cold days when you just really can't be bothered.

3. Merino Cool - Essie describes this as an "autumn mulberry", which I'm not sure I completely agree with. I've always found this to be quite an interesting shade, because it sits somewhere between being a berry shade and being a browny/purpley/greyish neutral. Although it definitely has some purple in it, I wouldn't describe this as your typical berry polish. For one, I always find that this applies darker on the nails than it appears in the bottle and seems more brown than anything else. But I do think this is one of those polishes that looks different depending on the light. I really like that this is a more unique shade and I always catch myself admiring my nails when I've used it - don't pretend you don't occasionally do that too! It's a lovely take on a berry nail polish whilst still being very much a neutral shade.

4. After School Boy Blazer - Now this is another interesting one, because at first glance this is basically just a black nail polish. However, if you take a closer look - or stare at it for five minutes like I did - you'll notice that it's actually a blackened navy. That means that this is essentially a very very very dark navy blue. I spent a long time a few years ago trying to pull off black nail polish, to no avail. I don't know what it was, I just didn't think it looked good on me. Something I love about this shade is that it kind of looks like you're rocking black nail polish without looking quite so harsh. This is probably one of my all time favourite dark nail polishes and one I've been wearing a lot these last few weeks!

5. Truth or Flare - This shade was part of the Essie Spring 2014 collection, but you can still get this on the Essie website. I remember that collection being quite a hit and I think I picked up another shade from it, but this was the one colour I had my eye on. I saw this in store and thought nothing of it because it really doesn't look like anything special in the bottle. I expected another bog-standard blue and I definitely wasn't in need of yet another one of those! What changed my mind about this shade was seeing Lily Pebbles wear it in a video and pretty much staring at her nails for the duration of said video. It's such a unique shade and one I'd never really seen before. I think we've established thus far that I'm terrible at describing colours, so let's just say that this is a greyish, denim blue? That sub-par description in no way does this beautiful shade justice, so go by the colour in the photos instead! I think this was one of my most worn polishes last year and I've been loving it again now that the weather has gotten colder. This is a great autumnal version of a lighter blue nail polish and a good way to wear blue on your nails once the temperatures drop!

The main thing I learn from these roundup posts is that I should probably stop buying so much nail polish. Oh well. I hope that this has also been somewhat helpful if you're looking to pick up an Essie shade or two this autumn! These are all shades I've used a lot and ones I'll be rotating through the rest of the season. On a different, yet highly important note, when does it become acceptable to crack out the glitters? I give myself a month!

  4. These are all so pretty for the fall. I need to get a few new colors and I'm eyeing the merino cool and fifth avenue. I definitely agree that a pop of color can look great with a monochrome outfit. Something very chic about it:)

  5. I love the colors truth or flee and master code. They, as well as this whole compilation, are so classic Autumn but still so unique from the same colors we see over and over to represent autumnal nails.
