The Autumn Berry Edit

From left to right: Blackberry, Cranberry and Plum.

As soon as autumn rolls around, my whole face and my nails get an autumn berry makeover. Gone is my desire for subtle, summery eyeshadows and peachy pink lips and in swoop all my berry-toned favourites. Today, I thought I'd round up some of my go-to berry picks from four categories: lips, eyes, cheeks and nails. These are all products I look forward to using once the weather gets colder and they're a nice consolation for having to drape myself in layers if I so much as take a step outside the house. Having said that, I do love autumn and now that it's October I thought I'd ring in the month with a proper seasonal edit!

Lips - Right, no surprises here. I know I've banged on about MAC Rebel already on this blog, but if we're talking favourite berry shades, I have to stick this one in there. This lipstick is one of MAC's Satin formulas but I've always found it to have more of a semi-matte finish, which I prefer when I'm looking to wear a bold lip. The formula along with the shade of this lipstick are just gorgeous. It's described as a midtonal cream plum and I'd say that's pretty accurate. I've mentioned this before, but one of the things I love the most about this lipstick is the fact that you can dab and blend just a tiny amount into the lips to create a lovely berry stain. I love a full-on dark lipstick look as much as the next gal, but I snack - like a lot. So to avoid getting lipstick smudged all over my face, I like to do the berry lips thing with a slight lip stain sometimes - practical and pretty.

Eyes - Is it just me or have my MAC quads been floating around endlessly on here recently? I'm sorry if you're sick to death of hearing me going on about MAC eyeshadows, but I really think their shade range is hard to beat! The two shades I'm mentioning in this quad were actually two of the first MAC eyeshadows I purchased: Blackberry and Cranberry - how appropriate! Blackberry is a matte eyeshadow and described as a muted burgundy-plum brown. I absolutely love the colour of this. It's a great one for in the crease, to deepen a more purple eyeshadow look and give it more of a berry vibe. The downside is that the formula of Blackberry isn't amazing, it's chalky and takes some working with to get an even finish. But if you're willing to put in some extra time, it's still a lovely eyeshadow! Cranberry is probably one of my all time favourite eyeshadows. I must say, it took me some time to pluck up the courage to actually wear this because it's a shade that was formerly quite far out of my comfort zone. It's described as a red plum with a pink shimmer and I think it looks gorgeous with blue eyes. I generally wear Cranberry by itself, sometimes with a bit of Blackberry blended into the crease - a true berry eye!

Cheeks - Right, I know the blusher in the above photos in no way, shape or form looks like a berry toned blush, but I can assure you that it's a lot darker in real life than it shows up in the photos. The blush in question is the Studio Makeup Soft Blend Blush in the shade Plum. I'm going to take a quick sidebar here and apologise for the fact that I seem have put together and autumnal plum edit. Apparently even products with the word 'berry' in the actual name are in fact plum shades. Perhaps plums are the official sponsor of autumn. Anyway, I digress. This is a blush I only really crack out in the colder months, because it is quite a deep shade and can look a bit out of place with a summery makeup look. It's kind of a pinky, berry shade and I find this gives a bit of a deeper flush, if that makes sense. It's my go-to autumnal blush and I'm looking forward to using this more as the weather gets colder!

Nails - I'm not going to lie, I have a multitude of berry-toned nail polishes, and they all get rotated fairly frequently in the autumn/winter season. I don't however own many matte nail polishes and I think there's something very nice about a matte berry nail in autumn - don't ask me why! Topshop's Bad Orchid Matte Nail Polish is such a lovely wine shade and applies really well. I wouldn't say the lasting power of this is tremendous, but it definitely sticks around for three days or so and with a shade like this, I'm happy to overcome my laziness and touch them up here and there - let it never be said that I lack dedication.

So those are the products that I'll be reaching for over the next few months. I like that a berry-toned shade can really be the focus of a makeup look, so if I do a berry eye or a berry lip I'll really go for it and leave the rest of my makeup fairly simple - I hear less is more and all that. What are some of your favourite berry coloured products? You know me - I'm always open to suggestions! Happy October!

    1. Berry eyeshadows can definitely seem a little daunting at first! I'll usually just wear a Cranberry as a wash of colour all over the eyelid and I generally use Blackberry as a crease shade, sometimes with Cranberry and sometimes with other berry-toned eyeshadows! xo
