Given the fact that I'm a bit of a makeup obsessive, I try a lot of products. Whilst I love a lot of the things I try, I do sometimes come across some disappointing products. I try to keep things very positive on the blog, so today is going to be a bit of a negative Nancy post, but I do think it's important that I also tell you which products not to waste your pennies on. Quick disclaimer: these are all products that haven't worked for me personally. Some of these products you may well know and love (I know a few are very popular) but I just didn't get along with them. So without further ado, let's dive into the products I could've done without!

Nivea In-Shower Soft Milk Skin Conditioner - This was one of the first in-shower moisturisers that was released and at the time I remember being quite intrigued. This is essentially a cream you apply in the shower after you've done your regular shower gel rinse. You put it on and then wait a minute or so before washing it back off, stepping out the shower and supposedly being left with supple skin. I have very dry skin, which means that every time I step out of the shower I immediately moisturise so that my skin stays in check. In the winter that particular routine gets unbearably chilly, so I had visions of being able to moisturise without having to leave the warmth of the shower. Nope. After leaving the shower having used this, it literally felt like I'd just used another shower gel. My skin was just as dry and this didn't seem to moisturise it at all. Maybe this is better for people who just need a slight hydration boost for their skin, but for me? A solid meh.

EOS Lip Balm in Summer Fruit - This was a product that I'd wanted to try for years, so when I finally saw this in Zurich I snapped it up in a heartbeat. I'd seen these everywhere and as I'd heard so much about them, my expectations were sky-high. Unfortunately this really didn't work for me. It left my lips more dry than anything and I felt like I was having to constantly reapply it to compensate. In short: really not worth the hype. That packaging though...

Maybelline Rocket Mascara - Okay, so this one might be a little controversial... Around a year ago, I saw this popping up all over the internet and the blogosphere so I obviously wanted to see what all the fuss was about and picked this up. I will say that I am extremely unadventurous with my mascara and I've stuck to the Benefit options for years now, but this just did not work with my eyelashes. The formula was way too wet, to the point where it was a challenge to apply. It seemed to just coat my lashes without really lengthening, volumising or doing anything. I definitely think that mascaras are a super individual thing and what works for some won't work for others and this one was just a bit of a fail on me.

KIKO Quick Dry Nail Lacquer in 858 - How pretty is this shade? It's like the perfect cross between shimmery and glittery rose gold and I was very excited to use it. I mentioned that I did't get on very well with this in my KIKO haul post so I won't go on but long story short, this chipped almost immediately and despite touch-ups, it just didn't really work at all. Alas the search for the perfect rose gold nail polish continues!

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Annika -  This is another product that I think might be a bit controversial, because the OCC lip tars are renowned for their amazing pigmentation and wear time. I won't argue with the pigmentation - you need a few drops of this and you're covered - but beyond that, this was just a mess on me. I can't actually seem to find the shade that I have anywhere on any websites, so perhaps that one's been discontinued, but I just couldn't get an even coverage of this. It applied so patchily and would then immediately smudge. I really wanted to love this, I tried applying it with a lip brush, with my fingers, leaving it to set for ten minutes - nothing worked! I may well have just picked up a dud or I'm just hopeless at working with it, but this one was just a bit of a miss for me.

Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet Lipstick in Peach Club - Oh my, the hype around these was so real. It seemed that everyone and anyone was waxing lyrical about how good these were and I, of course, immediately went in for a piece of the action. I steered clear of the more vivid shades and went for something in-between with Peach Club. I literally spent weeks trying to make this stuff work, because I wanted to love it so much. Truth was that this was just a nightmare to apply; much like the lip tar it didn't go on evenly, it didn't set and it would smudge at the slightest touch. I have heard that the bolder colours in this range are far more impressive than the nuder ones, so maybe I'll give these another try in the future, but for now I'm setting this aside.

L'Oreal Paris Infaillible Lip Liner in Always Toasted - Of all the products in this post, this has to be the one I'm most gutted about. I read so many beauty blogger recommendations singing this lip liner's praises and I was so chuffed to finally get my hands on it. There's no nice way to really put this, but the formula of this is not good. It's so incredibly stiff that I have to warm up the product first and then drag it across my lips to get any colour payoff at all! The colour of this is is absolutely gorgeous, it's a lovely dusty rose and it would've been the perfect shade for a lot of my nude lipsticks. With this one I really think I might just have picked up an old one, because even Lisa Eldridge has spoken about this one and in my eyes that woman can do no wrong. Do let me know if you've tried this and had a better experience because I have yet to find anything that really matches up with this colour!

Phew - that was a really long one! I hope that this hasn't been too much of a drag to read, it's definitely not as fun writing a post that's all based around things I didn't like, but sometimes it's just necessary! I'm really curious to hear if any of you have tried any of these products and had similar or completely different experiences - please do let me know!

    1. I've heard really good things about some of the brighter colours of the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet lipsticks (such as Olé Flamingo) so I think I might just have chosen a bad shade! Thank you, you have a lovely day too! xo

  3. Right!! I am so with you on the EOS lipbalms. I got one in the states and it made my lips feel so dry and chapped. And they always looked so instagram worthy....the sadness! xx

    1. I know, the EOS packaging is so misleading. They look cute, but I just really don't like the actual product! xo

  5. Completely agree with the EOS lip balm. I had high expectations for it but it was such a disappointment. It just sat on my lips and didn't really do anything. I like how it smelled tho.
I also dislike the Rocket Mascara. I wasn't a fan of the brush and the waterproof formula was so dry and hard to remove. I had a ton of lash fallouts! It was crazy.

  6. Girl, you and me both on the search for that perfect rose gold nail polish <3 Haha. I really found this post so super helpful, Sonja! The bourjois matte lipstick was something I had heard a lot about but wasn't sure, your post does make me want to go out and try some benefit mascara though! I just recently bought Rimmel lipliners in place of L'oreal ones and really like them!

    1. Haha, I totally get you, hopefully we'll both find the rose gold nail polish of our dreams! Thank you so much, I'm so glad you found this post helpful! The Benefit They're Real! mascara is amazing if you're after a good one, it's pretty much all I've been using for years! I have to try the Rimmel lip liners, I've heard so many good things about them! xo

  8. I've heard that the EOS balms aren't really that fantastic, I can't say I've ever really been that interested, good old Vaseline works perfectly for me. Such a shame about the Bourjois rouge edition velvet, I've only ever heard wonderful things about them but I've yet to try them myself. x

    1. I think a lot of people are drawn in by the packaging of the EOS balms, you were wise sticking to Vaseline! I really think I might just have picked up a weird one of the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet lipsticks, I might give another shade a try! xo

  9. EOS lip balms are so so so very overrated... They never make my lips feel smooth, and I have the same problem as you do - I have to reapply it super often! If you're looking for a lip balm that actually works, try Maybelline's Baby Lips (low-end) or fresh's Sugar Lip Balm (high-end)!

    1. I'm glad you agree with me about the EOS balm, it did nothing for my lips! I actually own some Maybelline Baby Lips lip balms as well as one of the Fresh Sugar lip balms (I'm kind of a lip balm addict) and I love them both, thank you for the recommendation! xo
