Happy November! We're nearing the end of autumn and you know what that means... Christmas is soon! Although I certainly won't be whipping out the Christmas decor anytime soon, the countdown has begun for me, including beginning to streamline my seasonal wish list - serious business. Festive spirit aside, the colder months mean that my skin is more temperamental than ever and catering to it can be a massive chore. I've switched up my base routine in the last few months, upped some of the hydration, rotated in some new products and generally edited it to fit my skin's needs. I've mentioned my skin type before, but in the winter it tends to be combination to dry, meaning I have areas where my skin is extremely dehydrated as well as areas that need a good powdering to prevent shininess - so high maintenance. In light of the recent switch-up,  thought I'd give you a little rundown of what I'm currently using and how I'm using it!

Priming - This step is an absolute necessity for me, because if I don't make sure that my skin is primed and prepped in some way, my base will just end up looking a complete mess. Although moisturising doesn't technically belong in the primer category, including the Dr. Hauschka Rose Day Cream in my morning skincare routine has made a massive difference in how my base looks. I spoke about this moisturiser recently and said it was definitely a night cream because of the extremely thick consistency. That still rings true, because if I were to apply this as liberally during the day as I do at night I would look like a greaseball, but I've been using this very sparingly in the morning and it leaves my skin with enough moisture to prevent any weird dry patches when I apply my foundation. To take it one step further, I then apply the Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Blur Perfector, a product I already banged on about in my October favourites post. This is a great one to minimise the appearance of fine lines and pores and generally make things look nice and smooth.

Foundation - It's no secret that I love a good drugstore foundation, more specifically Rimmel foundations. My go to recently has been the Rimmel Lasting Finish Nude Foundation and although this leans to the drier sides of foundations, it seems to prevent any excess shine throughout the day and because it's not as dewy in finish, this stuff lasts. To apply it, I've been loving using my Beauty Blender. I use this sponge slightly dampened which leaves such a lovely soft and flawless finish on the skin. Using this sponge is one of the main things in my routine where I really notice a difference. I must've had this for over a year now and it's taken me a while to wean myself off my usual foundation brushes, but this sponge is a little miracle worker. Definitely worth the investment!

Concealer - Concealer is an endless struggle for me and it's taken me a very long time to settle on some products that I actually like and have continued to use over time. The first will come as no surprise: the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer is just an amazing product for covering up blemishes and problem areas. I'll also use this around my nose, where my foundation tends to fade first to prevent that Rudolph look. As much as I love this for certain areas, it's a creasey mess if I try to use it under my eyes. Instead, I've been reaching for the Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer to brighten things up under the eyes and to make it look like I've had a solid 8 hours sleep when I've actually stayed up until 1am marathoning Bob's Burgers - don't judge.

Powder - This is the final step in my base routine and another one that's an absolute must if I want to keep things looking nice and even throughout the day. I seem to get through powder so quickly and it's a product I repurchase fairly often, so I prefer to stick to the drugstore offerings as opposed to repeatedly splurging on high-end powders. The Bourjois Healthy Balance Powder has been a favourite of mine for years, it gives you coverage without making your base cakey and it's got some great lasting power. There's also a good mirror in the compact, making it very handbag friendly for on the go application. This stuff prevents any shininess throughout the day and makes my whole base last better and longer. It's also in a bright pink compact - y'know, aesthetics and that.

I can assure you that this routine doesn't take half as long as it may seem, although I love applying my makeup, I can't be bothered to tinker around perfecting my base for half an hour. I obviously also have days when I chuck on some tinted moisturiser and concealer, stick my hair in a pineapple on top of my head and make for the door. This routine is for days when I'll be out for a long time or I want people to think that I go to bed at a decent time and/or didn't eat a family sized packet of crisps for dinner the night before. Hopefully you'll have gotten an idea or two if you're in the market for some new base products and let me know if you have any recommendations! I'm always partial to a new foundation.

  4. Rimmel foundations are the best! The Lasting Finish (with the red cap) is my HG! I wonder what the difference is between that one and the one with the white cap that you use. I really enjoy using their Match Perfection one too. Great post!! :)
