The Drugstore Makeup Edit

The drugstore is an amazing place for makeup and I've found some of my everyday favourites in the isles of Boots and Superdrug. Because (as mentioned previously), December was a very spendy month, I've been heading to the drugstore more lately and I've found some real gems! In light of that, I thought it might be fun to put together a drugstore makeup look featuring only more affordable products. This is a very simple kind of makeup look without lots of fancy techniques going on, so definitely more of an everyday type of look requiring minimal effort - a personal favourite of mine!

Drugstore Makeup Edit, affordable makeup, rimmel, bourjois, sleek rose gold, powder

The Base // I ran out of almost all my foundations last month which was massively inconvenient. I've been lusting after the NARS Sheer Glow Foundation for yonks now, but that costs a whopping £60 in Zurich so it's a thanks but no thanks from me on that front. I'd heard a lot of good things about the Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation so I picked that up last week and I've been testing it out to see how it holds up. So far I've really been liking it and I apply this to my skin over moisturiser and follow up with the Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer for under my eyes and to cover any blemishes. I love this concealer because it's lighter than some of the others I've tried, which means that it doesn't look cakey but also lasts pretty darn well!

Powders! I used to be the gal who literally covered her entire face in powder before leaving the house, only to find that it had all disappeared about ten minutes later and having to top it all up. Cue my skin changing from combination/oily to a dry mess within a month and my powder usage becoming more than a little sparing. I like that the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder is light (another cake-preventer) and I'll just use a light dusting of this across my forehead and down my nose. As this is more of an easy daytime look, there's no contouring and highlighting bits featured here but I do like to add a bit of glow anyway. The Sleek Blush in Rose Gold is the perfect candidate here because it's such a pretty shade but also has some serious sheen to it. I find that this kind of acts as a blush and highlight in one and it really perks up the complexion!

Drugstore Makeup Edit, affordable makeup, hm beauty, russet rose, eyeshadow, loreal brow artist plumper, nyx

Eyes & Brows // I'm keeping it simple once again with the brows and just using a bit of the L'Oreal Brow Artist Plumper. This fills in sparse areas whilst also adding a bit more "fullness" to the brows because of the microfibres so it's a great do-it-all product! I always prime my eyelids because I find it makes a world of difference to both the colour and longevity of eyeshadow. The NYX HD Eyeshadow Base is a great one for this, just pat some onto the eyelids, blend it out and you're all prepped for the shadow. The eyeshadow in question here is the H&M Beauty Eye Shadow in Russet Rose. I know - how predictable am I? I just have a thing for warm eyeshadow! This is a bit of a one wash wonder - one layer blended out and it looks like you've made a load more effort than you actually have!

Okay, so mascara. I'll hold my hands up and say that I've cheated here - I'm sorry! I have some drugstore mascaras in my stash that I could've stuck in here, but truth be told I don't think they're amazing and I'm not about to recommend something I don't actually use on a regular basis! So I've just stuck in my regular old Benefit They're Real! Mascara, but I'm fully aware that the drugstore is chockablock with amazing affordable mascaras. I'm currently on a hunt for a good one because my Benefit is running out so I shall be trawling the Maybelline counter first as I hear good things about the Lash Sensational...

Drugstore Makeup Edit, affordable makeup, nyx, retractable lip liner, nude, hm beauty, cream chestnut,

Lips // Probably my favourite category of the bunch because I have a minor obsession with lip products. Because we're doing a bit of colour on the eye, I thought I'd keep things simple on the lips so I've gone with two nude products - no surprises there! To keep everything in place and to create a nice base for lipstick, I like to line my lips first. The NYX Retractable Lip Liner in Nude is not only a gorgeous colour but also seriously durable and apparently waterproof! I have yet to test that feature but if you ever fancy a swim with lipstick on this might just be your guy. The H&M Beauty Cream Lipstick in Cream Chestnut is an almost perfect match with the lip liner and imparts a gorgeous browny-nude colour to the lips. Super pretty and fuss free!

This makeup takes all of about ten minutes so it's very work/school/uni friendly and all these products wear really well as the day goes on! As much as I love taking my time to apply my makeup and occasionally pulling out all the stops, sometimes you just can't be bothered or really don't have the time so I tend to go for this kind of a makeup look on busier days. The drugstore really is an amazing place to go if you're looking for new makeup and I love browsing through all the new releases. I've spent a considerable amount of time perusing the drugstore isles and I rarely leave empty handed! What are some of your drugstore favourites? Let me know! In the meantime I'm off to do some serious mascara research!

  4. I've got the "traditional"healthy mix foundation. They discontinued it and it looks like they replaced it by the one on your pic. Any idea if the compo is the same? Also, do you know what the difference is between this one and the serum? I would love to try one of them but I don't know which one.

    1. I'm afraid I'm new to the Bourjois foundations so I can't tell you how it compares to the old formulation. From what I've read online, I believe the Healthy Mix Foundation has a thicker consistency with a higher coverage and more longevity whereas the Healthy Mix Serum has a lighter texture and less coverage. I think deciding between the two depends on what type of skin you have and whether you prefer more or less coverage! xo
