5 Tips for a Healthier Spring, health tips, detox, how to get healthier, healthy snacks

The winter has been a particularly decadent time in terms of my diet. I went by the phrase treat yo' self a few too many times and I'm still feeling the effects of my many unhealthy choices. Most people assume that because I eat a plant-based diet I'm über healthy. Nooo. I eat just as much crap as the next person, probably a whole lot more! Since the start of March, however, I've been making a few changes here and there to help my overall health and to try and get back in the swing of things. No more eating two family packs of crisps a day or baking and eating entire batches of cookies for me! I thought today I'd share five things that I've switched up recently to help me get healthier for spring!

First and foremost let's get a disclaimer up in here, shall we? I am not, nor do I claim to be a health professional. The things that I'm sharing here are things that work for me and I perceive to be beneficial in my every day life. I also don't mean to sound preachy, we all know I'm no healthy kale-scoffing angel - the family packs of crips and stuff, guys! So disclaimer aside, let's get on with the tips!

1. Cut the crap - Basically cut out some of your vice foods. By this I mean the extra junk food you eat and know you maybe shouldn't eat quite as often. Up until very recently you could routinely find me cradling a tube of Pringles in one hand and scoffing a pack of Oreos from the other. I've gone on a bit of crisp ban recently because I used to eat so many that I think it's best if I just leave them altogether for a while. Of course that doesn't mean don't treat yourself from time to time, just perhaps don't let junk food become a daily occurrence. Once you banish some of these foods you instantly start feeling so much better too, which is also a definite bonus!

2. Apps and cookbooks - If you're anything like me and you're a bit of a sucker for convenience food then you might occasionally lack the motivation or inspiration to cook a proper nutritional meal. Something that I've found really helps with this are apps and cookbooks. Just having a look through the gorgeous photos makes me want to give the recipes a try! One of my favourite cookbooks is Oh She Glows by Angela Liddon. It has such fab and simple recipes in it, which often just use ingredients that you may already have at hand. An app that I definitely recommend downloading is the Deliciously Ella app. I'm sure you've already heard of her before, she has an amazing website too and her app is seriously a thing of beauty. It's full of amazing photography and super quick and easy recipes. Whenever I feel like just grabbing for an unhealthy and convenient meal, I have a little scroll through this app and so far I've never come up empty handed!

3. Drink, drink, drink! - And by that I mean water or tea! This is definitely one I'm still working on, I tend to get so dehydrated during the day without even realising! This is one of the typical cliché things that everyone tells you, but when you take the time to really follow through it makes such a difference to your overall well being. Both your digestion and your skin will reap the benefits of being more hydrated and for me it always helps me feel less sluggish. I make sure to bring a water bottle wherever I go and then just fill it up with tap water as the day goes on, which also saves me a fair few pennies in beverages!

4. Snack right - This is a huge one for me. I'm a snack monster and despite what some people may say, I personally think snacking between meals is fine as long as you snack right. That means that as opposed to eating junk food between meals, I've been going for healthier options. Some things I love are homemade spreads on corn-cakes, healthy snack bars (nakd bars are great!) and frozen berries. I've been particularly loving snacking on frozen cherries which I know sounds weird and super lame but they're actually really yummy and a very satisfying snack! If you're after something sweeter or more chocolatey, the Deliciously Ella app I mentioned has loads of recipes for healthy snacks too!

5. Take a walk - Exercise really isn't my forte. I don't enjoy the gym, I'm not one for competitive sports and I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to things like jogging. The one form of exercise I do really enjoy is walking. I think it's also a lot more accessible to people than if I were to say go to the gym - gyms in Switzerland are crazy expensive! All you have to do is put on your trainers and close the door behind you. I try to go for a walk every day, it's so good for you and it'll get your heart rate up as well as getting you a whole load of fresh air. I'm hoping that I eventually work up to more strenuous exercise, but for now I'm happy having a little wander every day. Also you get to see loads of dogs so that's me sold anyway.

This has been pretty different to my usual blog content, but I hope you've enjoyed it nonetheless! I thought it would be nice to document the small changes I'm making and I guess this way I'm holding myself accountable too! I really hope this has been somewhat helpful to anyone who is also on a quest for a healthier spring! What are some of your tips for staying healthy? Help a gal out! On that note, I'm off for a snack...

  2. My nutribullet has been the best thing I have ever invested in! I have a green smoothie everyday and I can definitely see a big difference in my daily life style - it's also amazing because I can barely taste the 'green' in my smoothie and it is also very delish :)

  5. These tips are so great! I'll be honest - I'm not proud of my current diet and I can promise you, I am sure that however bad and much sweets you eat, I eat tons more! I'm such a sugar addict it's actually gone overboard but I have previously succeeded in eating and living healthier so I really want to get there again! My problem is for sure that I'm so lazy when it comes to actually cooking for myself so I will definetely be sure to check out some cookbooks! Otherwise I love talking walks as well so I'll really try to do that a lot more! Great post! xx

    1. I seriously understand you so much! This sounds a lot like me, to be honest! I used to be so healthy with my diet and exercise so I just really need to take some time to get back on track! I think loads of people are lazy in terms of cooking, which is why convenience meals are so popular! Cooking on a regular basis just takes some time to get used to, and it's a great way to get back into the swing of things! xo
