From left to right: Countess and Heat of the Moment.

I've tried quite a lot from the H&M Beauty range over the last few months and for the most part I've been more than impressed. I was in H&M the other day and the beauty section had been moved downstairs - I definitely had a brief moment of panic thinking it was gone for good! - and I noticed a few new things. I've been meaning to try the Colour Essence Eye Creams for a while now, but they never seemed to have the shades I wanted. This time there were about five shades I could've snapped up right then and there but I managed to restrain myself to two! I've been putting these to the test since and thought I'd let you know my impression of them as well as showing you some swatches!

I picked up two shades from this range: Countess and Heat of the Moment. I've said this before but I'm going to say it again, the colours on the packaging of these are completely different to the actual shade of the eyeshadow! The packaging of Countess had a pale pink strip of colour on the outside to showcase the shade, which doesn't at all match up with the actual product. So be wary when selecting a shade and definitely go by the testers!

Little packaging rant aside, these are marketed by H&M as "A luxurious cream-to-powder eyeshadow with a silky mousse texture and pure, intense colors. Quick drying for effortless application." I can certainly confirm that the texture of these is pretty much a mousse. You can probably tell by the photos the pretty sizable hole I have in both shadows, which is due to me expecting a firm cream texture and just jabbing my finger straight into it. I can't say I really noticed that these were a cream to powder formula. The formula was quite wet and seemed to stay that way once on the lids as well. Something unrelated that I wasn't really expecting with these is the shimmer. They're both quite shimmery, something you can't really tell until the colour is blended out. Shimmer doesn't really bother me, but if you're a strictly matte eyeshadow kinda gal, it may be something to keep in mind!

I'll start off with Countess, the more neutral of the two. This is a warm-toned browny colour that actually ends up looking the slightest bit peachy once it's on the lids. I applied this with my finger and then blended it out properly with a fluffy blending brush. This isn't really an eyeshadow that gives a very opaque colour once you've blended it out, the finish will tend to be sheer. Aside from that, this performed well and I was able to get an even finish that wore well for most of the day without creasing and with only slight fading.

The second shade, Heat of the Moment, is the typical kind of shade I gravitate towards - I'm a sucker for a good orange eyeshadow! Unfortunately, this one was a bit more of a mission to make work. First off I applied this with a flat shadow brush and then blended it out with a fluffy brush and that just ended up as a bit of a patchy mess. I then tried applying the product with my finger and blending it out with a fluffy brush, to only marginally better results. It's such a shame because this is such a gorgeous colour but you can't really build this up to the full intensity on the lid. It just ends up looking like a very sheer orange and if you try to build up the colour, it ends up creasing more. Once I was finished applying this, it still looked very patchy and proceeded to crease almost immediately. I wore it all day and by the evening it had severely creased and faded.

I've noticed before in H&M's powder eyeshadow range that there is considerable inconsistency between products in the same range and this seems to be one of those cases. I really liked Countess as an everyday shade (albeit a sheer one) and I think I'll be getting a lot of use out of it. Heat of the Moment, on the other hand, just took so much effort to get even a sub par result. You may even be able to see that the swatch is fairly patchy too, and when blended out the colour is nowhere near that of the swatch. I will say that I didn't use an eyeshadow primer under these (I usually use MAC's Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Painterly) but I only use primer when I'm working with powder eyeshadow formulas. I generally don't feel the need for another cream product under a cream product when I'm using eyeshadow, but it's definitely possible that these would do better on primed lids!

Are these the best cream eyeshadows I've ever used? No. I think that I perhaps need a bit more practice at working with this formula (it is a bit of an interesting one) and maybe someone slightly less cack-handed could do a better job! I think it's worth checking out this range because there are definitely a few lovely shades. Although I found Heat of the Moment a bit harder to work with, I did like Countess a lot and I think if you're after a sheer everyday shadow that you can just apply using your fingers, it might be the one for you.

So, a bit of a mixed review from me, but I hope it's been helpful nonetheless! My advice would be to have a little swatch in store, see what looks good and to go by that. Have you ever tried any of these eyeshadows? I'm really curious to hear how others got on with these! I hope you all have a lovely weekend! Happy Friday!

  6. That's annoying, I love countess from the swatches you shown. They look both very beautiful in your pictures but that's a shame about the actual result. Thanks for such an honest review though.

  8. These two are such a gorgeous shades! I have seen so many bloggers rave about this Topshop range but I haven't tried anything from it yet. Will definitely consider to get my hands on some. It is a bit disappointing that Heat of the moment appeared patchy and kinda sheer. Thank you for sharing!

I've been dying to try the orangey/gold cream eyeshadow pot I read about on your blog a few months ago ever since I read it, haha, but just haven't got round to tracking down an H&M with a beauty section. I really like your blog ☺ do you want to follow each other on Bloglovin’ so we can keep up with each others’ posts?
