Worth the Hype? Nivea Men Post Shave Balm as a Primer

Nivea Men Post Shave Balm as Primer, aftershave balm as primer, cheap primer, makeup primer, review

I've heard so many people rave about the Nivea Men Post Shave Balm as a makeup primer and to say I was sceptical is a bit of an understatement. To be perfectly honest I'm not big on priming my skin before makeup, I've tried a fair few and all they really did was break me out. Because of that I was on the fence about trying this but when I saw how cheap it was (around a fiver) I decided I'd give it a go! I've been using this pretty much every day for almost a week now so I thought it was high time I shared my thoughts on it and whether or not it's worth the hype!

So first off let's talk formula. This has quite a thin and runny texture and is very light when you apply it on the skin Something I have to emphasise is that this is most definitely a fragranced product. It has that typical Nivea "man" scent to it, in case that's remotely helpful to anyone! When I first put it on my face and smelled the fragrance I immediately thought it was going to break me out. I have very sensitive skin and I'm super wary of heavily fragranced products but lo and behold, I've been using this for a week and it hasn't broken me out!

If you take a look at the ingredients, the first thing that bodes super well for us sensitive skinned gals is the lack of alcohol. Usually men's aftershave products are chockablock with alcohol, which my skin reacts badly too. The second ingredient (after water) is glycerin, which is a very common ingredient in face primers and perhaps an indicator as to why so many people love using it under their makeup.

So let's get on with my experience with the product! I find it very difficult to get my base to look even, somehow if I don't take extra care my makeup starts to look cakey very easily. I also have combination skin which veers from oily to Sahara-desert-dry. It's safe to say my skin is fairly high-maintenance! The first time I applied this I did so after I'd done my usual morning skincare routine and let my moisturiser sink in for around ten minutes or so. I then applied a thin layer of the Nivea Post Shave Balm and massaged it into my skin. The finish of it is ever so slightly tacky, which explains why makeup would adhere to it so well.

Once I'd left it for a few minutes, I applied my current foundation (Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation) with a damp Beauty Blender. Straight away I noticed that my foundation was applying much more smoothly than usual, and everything was blending very nicely. I then went about my usual concealing and powdering business. I'll be real with you, most of the time when I apply my base I don't look in the mirror and think "fab, what a great job I've done!", it's more of a "meh, alright, that'll do". This sounds so ridiculous but I looked in the mirror when I was done with my base, I had a moment where I thought that this was what my foundation was supposed to look like. Seriously, I could wax lyrical about how this made my foundation look. My makeup wasn't cakey, my pores weren't as noticeable and yet everything looked so glowy!

I wore my makeup pretty much all day on the first day to see how it really held up and things lasted longer, looked better and my skin didn't get as oily as it usually does throughout the day! I also spent a considerable portion of my day pestering everyone and asking if my face looked different than usual whilst making them closely inspect my skin. It may well have been just to get me to stop asking, but I got nothing but positive feedback! Since then I've used this every time I've worn makeup and I'm still chuffed with the results.

Overall I'd say definitely give this a try if you're at all curious. If it's completely pants for you then you're only down a fiver (not as bad as when I splurged on a Kiehl's primer that totally broke me out, only to have to pass it along to my mum - heartbreaking), so I think it's well worth a shot! Final verdict: yes, for me this is most definitely worth the hype! I never thought that a super affordable men's product would blow all the other primers I've tried out of the water, but there you have it! Plus the bottle is huge and will last you an absolute age! Have you tried the Nivea Men Post Shave Balm as a makeup primer? Let me know! I hope you all have a lovely weekend! Happy Friday!

  5. I've heard a few people mention this and it sounds so good! My mum tried this out and didn't like it so I might steal the rest of her bottle and try it out for myself.
