Life Lately | Exciting News & An Update

It's been a long while since I last wrote one of these life update posts and seeing as I've had some exciting news recently along with some things I've wanted to mention, I thought it was high time! If you're a regular reader, or you pop by my little nook of the internet every now and again, you'll know that I very rarely talk about anything personal on here. When it's about beauty, the words will flow easily and I'll know exactly what I want to say but when it's about me I always feel a little stumped!

So let's start off with the news! I found out yesterday that I passed my dissertation and that I'm completely done with uni! I know it seems pretty standard news around this time of year, with people finishing uni left, right and centre, but it wasn't quite as straightforward for me. I didn't talk about this anywhere on the internet, pretty much because I was too embarrassed, but I was actually supposed to finish uni half a year ago. The reason it all got delayed was because I actually failed my first dissertation. I study in Switzerland, so the length of the dissertation I had to write was 60 pages, averaging out to about 24'000 words. Pretty bloody hefty!

Now I'll hold my hands up and admit that in hindsight, my first dissertation really wasn't great and probably didn't deserve a pass grade, but when you've just finished what seems like a marathon of writing, it's particularly awful. I found out right before Christmas and right when I was studying for my bachelor exams (a four hour written and half hour oral exam) which took my motivation right away as I knew I'd be studying for another half year because I had to redo my dissertation. I'd never even heard of anyone not passing their dissertation and just felt like a massive failure. Needless to say I was absolutely gutted and mildly horrified to have to admit to everyone who had passed all their work that I'd tripped at pretty much the last hurdle. Once my exams were done, I had to go straight back to planning a dissertation (different to my first one) and handing in a proposal. Nonetheless, I buckled down and spent months and months working on it, which, thankfully, paid off!

Although I was initially embarrassed about failing and certainly never would have thought I'd write a blog post about it, I've realised that there's no need to feel like you have to bury it. All the people I told were so nice and supportive and in the end it really wasn't as big a deal as I made it out to be in my head. People didn't give me the horrible judgemental looks I was so afraid of getting and I just got on with my work!

Aside from the goings on in the uni department, I've been looking for a job and concentrating on my blog. I've posted three times a week on here for almost a year now and I still really love blogging. My content has always been very heavily beauty related, but in the more recent months I've felt like bringing more variety into it. I'm not talking any drastic changes, but more along the lines of some fashion-y posts or more posts about restaurants or places to visit in Zurich. I've also been cooking a lot more, since I've had more time recently, so I'd quite like to bring in some recipe posts too!

Basically, I'd quite like to up my blog game! There are a few areas where I really feel like I could do better, but blogging is just such an all-consuming thing that sometimes you just need a few hours in the day where you're not checking social media. Something I've been awful at in the last few months has been Twitter. If I'm perfectly honest, I don't feel like I always have interesting things to say and sometimes I'd like to jump in on interesting conversations with bloggers I love, but I end up getting too shy an chickening out. Pretty ridiculous, I am aware, but apparently I'm shy as anything on Twitter! I'm also horribly behind on replying to my blog comments, so I'm going to go on a replying spree very soon! Gosh, this is making me look like a bit of an awful blogger, isn't it? I promise I'm not that bad!

Right, so this post has been completely all over the place and just a bit of a general ramble. Big props to you if you managed to make it to the end of this without falling asleep! I won't lie, it's taken some courage to just straight up put my dissertation struggles out there, but hopefully a few of you can relate to how stressful uni can be! I'd also love to hear your feedback on whether you'd like to see some more variety in content around these parts or if you think I should just stick to beauty! Right, I promise I'll shut up now. Happy Friday and have a lovely weekend!
