Incorporating Colourful Mascara into my Routine

When it comes to makeup, I tend to try a whole lotta things. If my curiosity is piqued, chances are, I'm going to want to buy it and put it on my face. Sometimes that backfires and I look like a tired clown (colour correcting) or a weird alien (silver metallic lipstick), other times, however, I love the result and end up incorporating it into my makeup routine.

Colourful mascara was something I thought I'd left firmly in the noughties, along with my Glitter Babes paraphernalia and Lip Smackers collection. For some reason, when I walked past the MAC counter recently and happened upon the Mini Zoom Lash Mascaras in various different colours, I was compelled to reach for the shade Beets Me, a brownish/cassis shade.

As I have blonde hair and blue eyes, black mascara can sometimes look just a little harsh on my complexion. I feel like a lot of brown mascaras also look a little odd on me, so I've tended to stick to the former and just deal with it. Exactly why I thought a deep, purpley brown shade would look better, I'm not sure, but I bought it anyway and decided I'd made a fantastic choice.

I barely ever really get excited about mascara. Perhaps this makes me a bad beauty blogger but I honestly think it's one of the most dull categories and trying new mascaras has always been such a task to me, that I've stuck to more or less the same two for the last five years (different tubes, dw). Getting pumped to try mascara was a novel feeling that I hadn't experienced since I was in my teens, so I embraced it and enthusiastically put my new mascara to the test.

The shade does look somewhat intimidating when you look at it in the tube, but once you apply it to the lashes, you honestly wouldn't know I was wearing a colourful mascara. It just looks like a softer version of my other mascaras. The harshness that bothers me with black mascara, however, is almost completely gone with this. It's reminiscent of a brown mascara but I feel like the purple hues bring a little something extra out in my eyes, although that could just be down to me scrutinising my own face with squinty eyes in the bathroom mirror for just a tad too long. Either way: I like it a whole lot.

I was so caught up in the colour of the mascara, that I didn't really stop to wonder whether or not I'd like the formula. It's much drier than my usual Benefit Roller Lash Mascara and the result isn't quite as dramatic in terms of length. On the flip side, it lasts better on me than my usual mascara and it doesn't do that super annoying thing where it smudges above my lids, under my brows. This is honestly one of the only mascaras I've ever tried that doesn't do that, so that in itself is extremely exciting to me.

I'm honestly chuffed about this discovery and it's not something I ever would've expected to like so much. The mascara really adds a nice, soft touch to your makeup and the colour is so subtle that I haven't found that it interferes with any eyeshadow looks I choose to pair it with. I'm also very impressed by the formula. I don't think I've ever tried mascara from MAC before, but to find one that banishes an issue I normally have with almost every mascara I've ever tried, waterproof or otherwise, is an achievement to me in itself.

If you fancy switching things up a little in the mascara department, without doing anything too wild or noticeable, I think this is a really lovely little touch. The colourful tubes are also minis (I'm not even sure if they sell them as full sizes where I am), so you don't have to spend an arm and a leg on something you're not entirely sure about. Whilst I'll be sticking to this more subtle shade, it's good to know that if I do decide to return to my pre-teen blue mascara phase, MAC's got me covered. Have you tried colourful mascara recently?

  2. This post really inspired me to get out of my all-black-mascara comfort zone, so I'll definitely look into trying out more colorful mascaras in the futur! Thank you for that!:)
