Red Lipstick for People who don't like Red Lipstick

I always feel like a bit of a fraud being such a makeup hoarder as well as a blogger and secretly not liking red lipstick all that much. I feel like it's one of the first thing a lot of people think of when they think about makeup. Don't get me wrong there are red lipsticks I've found and loved along the way but they don't seem to get used anywhere near as much as they should because I tend to just feel a bit meh about the overall shade on me. There are, however, a few in my collection (few being the key word) that have withstood the test of time and transcended over my mild and occasional dislike for red lipstick. I think the reason is that these aren't really classic reds, there's a little something different about them and they just work. So if you, like me, can be somewhat wary of a red, this might just give you the inspo you need to adorn your makeup wardrobe with a bit more colour!

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip in Mama - This walks the line between a bright red and and orange yet somehow manages not to look too bold on the lips. It may not be the typical colour you'd think to crack out during the warmer months, but something about the shade actually looks gorgeous with a bronzed up complexion, a healthy dose of highlight and lashings of mascara. The formula of this is standard matte lipstick business: complete dry-down and impressive longevity. You can reapply as you go but be prepared to have a somewhat dehydrated pout! Best to pack a balm but worth it for the long-lasting result you get!

Sephora Cream Lip Stain in 25 - I only picked this up about a month ago but I feel as though I've already used a fairly substantial amount of it. This is kind of like Colourpop Mama's more vampy sister lipstick. The shade is deeper and decidedly less bright. I wore this through dinner, which was an unquestionably bold move but it paid off! Bar a bit of fading in the centre of the lips, this stayed on my lips and didn't dehydrate them all to much either. This pairs really well with a subtle warm eyeshadow look and the mini packaging makes it ideal for on the go.

Colourpop Matte X Lippie Stix in Chateau - If you're a fan of matte lipsticks and you have yet to try Colourpop's Matte X Lippie Stix formula then I highly recommend checking them out. I've said it before but it never ceases to amaze me how such a matte lipstick can pack such a punch in terms of pigmentation. This is definitely the vampiest of the bunch and I tend to reserve this for a night out but the blackened red colour of it is just absolutely stunning. Usually I'll keep things pretty natural on the eyes because it is a bit of a bolder option. It's another one you don't need to reapply much because the longevity is fab and the shape of the lipstick makes it super easy to touch up when you're out and about.

From left to right: Mama, 25 and Chateau.

These definitely aren't shades that will scream summer to most people but to me these are the classic reds that always have a place in my beauty stash. I'm veering away from my more classic picks and subbing in these three for when I fancy a red lip option. All three are also super affordable which is a huge bonus! Are you a red lipstick fan? What're some of your faves?

  2. I love red lipstick... on other people! I will wear it occasionally but always feel a bit self conscious with it on. The one I've been loving and reaching for a lot lately though is I'm Shook from Jeffree Star, it's such a gorgeous shade. Very similar to Mama and 25 actually xx

  3. I used to hate wearing red lipstick since I just didn't think I could pull it off. 25 is such a nice tone and perfect colour because it's slightly more muted which I love
